The Institute for Oriental and European Archaeology (OREA) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) in Vienna is offering three

PRAE DOC POSITIONS (F/M)
in the ERC Starting Grant “Challenging Time(s): A New Approach to Written Sources for Ancient Egyptian

Chronology”.

(Funding ID 757951) The positions advertised will be devoted to research on written materials as a source for the historical

chronology of the

  1. (a)  Early Dynastic Period, Old Kingdom (praedoc 1)

  2. (b)  First Intermediate Period, Middle Kingdom, Second Intermediate Period (praedoc 2)

  3. (c)  New Kingdom (praedoc 3)

Applicants shall be able to demonstrate their general ability to evaluate texts of the periods given and to interpret them with attention to details.

Detailed job description:

The successful applicants will collect, mainly from publications, and work with data on a philological basis. They are asked to assemble a comprehensive collection of dates found in inscriptions for the periods for which they are responsible, to test and verify their assignment to kings or local potentates and to determine their relations and sequence. They are also required to work with prosopographic data in order to verify previously proposed genealogies of commoners and sequences of officials and to establish new ones. Furthermore, they are expected to (re)evaluate annalistic material and historical inscriptions of the time in combination with supplementary data. All materials investigated shall allow for a refined and more secure establishment of Egyptian historical chronology for the respective periods.

Applicants are encouraged to conduct their research as (part of) their PhD dissertations. If so, the applicants are expected to do their PhD at the University of Vienna under the supervision of the Principal Investigator of the ERC Starting Grant “Challenging Time(s)”, Roman Gundacker. The subsequent publication of the applicants’ research results (PhD dissertation) as a monograph can be cared for.

Your profile:

  •   a master’s degree in Egyptology (or equivalent)

  •   a particular interest in philological studies

  •   a very good command of the ancient Egyptian language

  •   a very good command of English (written and spoken)

  •   reading competence (or higher) in French and German, additional language skills are an advantage

  •   track record according to education and career

    We offer:

  •   three part time positions (prae doc, 30h/week)

  •   a period of up to three years (start 13 January 2020)

  •   an annual minimum gross salary of € 30.072 according to the salary scale of the Austrian Academy

    of Sciences (social insurance is included)

  •   The project covers all expenses directly related to the conduct of the research, including travel and

    conference fees.

    The successful applicants are expected to take their residence in Vienna. There, they will find attractive working conditions in a city with a high quality of life and a well-established and dynamic research location.
